Six years in the making, First Australians is the most ambitious television project to be undertaken on Indigenous Australia. Produced by Australia's leading Aboriginal filmmakers, the series chronicles the birth of a country and the collision of two worlds. It is an epic story that comes alive through the struggles of individuals, both black and white. Beautifully filmed, the series blends landscape, art, interviews and first-hand accounts with a vast archival collection to present the birth of contemporary Australia as never seen before, from the perspective of its first people - the first Australians. A WELL FOUNDED FEAR (Screening on SBS on Wednesday 19th November at 8.30pm)

The 1951 Convention on Refugees imposes a major obligation on countries not to deport or expel people to countries where they face persecution or risk serious human rights violation. Admittedly it is difficult for government authorities to assess whether someone is a legitimate refugee. People do not always escape their countries with documentation that proves who they say they are or supports their claims of persecution. A Well- Founded Fear shows that we cannot afford to get these decisions wrong. The study guide to accompany the film has been written for middle and senior secondary students. It provides information and suggestions for learning activities in English, Geography, International Politics, Legal Studies, Media, Religion and Society, SOSE, VCE VET Community Services and curriculum projects discussing the issue of asylum seekers.

AUSTRALIAN STORY: ALL THE BOYS IN TOWN

This rousing edition of Australian Story brings together some of the best known names in Australian rock music history - from Chrissy Amphlett to Jimmy Barnes to Neil Finn and Midnight Oil. The story centres on Rick Grossman who was a bass player for the The Divinyls when he became hooked on heroin. His decision to step back and get help came at a cost when the band quickly replaced him and moved on. Now drug free and playing with the Hoodoo Gurus, he's assembled an all-star cast of Australian musicians to produce a blockbusting fund raising CD to help 'The Buttery', the Northern New South Wales charity that helped him recover. Grossman's close friend Jimmy Barnes introduces this final Australian Story of 2008.

FOUR CORNERS: THE GREAT HISTORY WAR

A few days ago Kevin Rudd and Paul Keating skirmished over Gallipoli's place at the epicentre of the national psyche. Keating dismissed it as a faraway European affair, the spilt Australian blood testament to the country's lack of self-esteem. But Gallipoli, countered Rudd, was an act of courage that shaped national identity for a century. The Labor luminaries are at sharp ends of an argument that is challenging more and more historians: whether, 90 years on, the Great War should be remembered as a triumph or a tragedy - and whether Australia may have oversold its role in the conflict.

Stefan Gates travels to Venezuela in the midst of a socialist revolution led by President Hugo Chavez. He arrives the day after President Chavez is re-elected and finds a country split down the middle, locked in a battle between rich and poor. Key to this battle is the president's massive redistribution of land and food to the poor, paid for with oil exports. During the trip, Stefan cooks in the slums' soup kitchens, investigates food shortages in subsidised shops, and meets one of the richest men in the country who has been battling with "land invaders" for five years.

A WELL FOUNDED FEAR

Every year, thousands of people flee their homelands to escape war and persecution. The people who make it to Australia end up in detention centres while their claims for asylum are processed. This can take months, if not years and can lead to a sense of profound uncertainty. The Australian Government eventually sends back asylum seekers it doesn't think are refugees, and who can't prove they have "a well-founded fear" for their safety. International law stipulates that people shouldn't be sent to unsafe locations. But like many countries that deport asylum seekers, the Australian Government doesn't monitor what happens to the people they send back - they don't regard it as their responsibility. A Well-Founded Fear follows the work of a small group of committed Australians who have made it their mission to find the asylum seekers Australia has rejected. (STUDY GUIDE AVAILABLE)

THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON

This spoof documentary plays on the conspiracy theory that the moon landing in 1969 never took place, but was pre-produced by Stanley Kubrick. The story is told by Kubrick's widow, Christiane, and interviews pieced together with Donald Rumsfeld, Henry Kissinger, the former White House Chief of Staff General Alexander Haig, Richard Nixon's adviser Lawrence Eagleburger and former CIA Director Vernon Walters. They appear to be putting forward the idea that President Richard Nixon asked for fake footage to be shot at the MGM studios in England, with CIA agents acting the parts of the astronauts. All those involved in the scam were sworn to secrecy and given new identities. But Nixon, fearing they would talk, sent the CIA after four collaborators.

WHERE'S MY ROBOT?

"In three to eight years, we will have a machine with the general intelligence of an average human being....a machine that will be able to read Shakespeare, play office politics and tell a joke. At that point the machine will be able to educate itself at fantastic speed. In a few months it will be at 'genius' level, and in a few months after that its powers will be incalculable." - Professor Marvin Minsky, Artificial Intelligence Expert. This startling promise was made by Professor Minksy in 1970, when he was Professor of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at MIT. Thirty eight years later and the promise of a useful robot is still regularly made by writers, filmmakers and most importantly, by scientists.
